2025 World Landscape Architecture Shanghai International Forum

Mr. Namchai Saensupha, Founding Director of Shma Company Limited, was honored to be invited as one of the guest speakers at the WLA Shanghai International Forum held at the Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Design. The forum explored the future of human-habitat design under the theme “Future Fusion.” This was the first face-to-face forum organized by WLA, bringing together a diverse community of professionals, academics, and students to discuss interdisciplinary collaboration for innovative and sustainable development.
In the afternoon session, Mr. Namchai Saensupha joined the Deep Dives through Pioneering Design Forum, engaging in discussions with landscape architects from various firms. Participants included industry leaders from China and abroad, such as lead designers from AECOM (China), Hassell (China), Trop (Thailand), Landtek (China), FISH Design (China), and Carolina Solar (Switzerland). The session explored landscape practices, urban design, natural and human dimensions, and small-scale interventions, all in response to the forum’s theme of Future Fusion and the value of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Mr. Namchai Saensupha contributed to the discussion under the topic ‘Performative/Regenerative Landscape: The Expanding Role of Landscape Architecture in a Challenging World,’ highlighting how landscape architecture plays a critical role in shaping places and cities to support sustainability. He emphasized the importance of designing landscapes that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also performative spaces that actively respond to climate challenges, enhance ecological resilience, improve urban livability, and regenerate the surrounding environment. His talk presented case studies on how landscape systems can serve as living infrastructure, integrating water management, microclimate improvement, biodiversity enhancement, and social wellbeing into one holistic design approach.

We believe landscapes play a vital role across all scales, transforming spaces into places where nature and people thrive, places that sustain, innovate, and inspire the future.
