Located at the tip of Brickell Key in the heart of Miami, South Florida, where land meets water on three sides, the existing Mandarin Oriental Miami is being reimagined into The Residences at Mandarin Oriental, Miami, an ultra-luxury residential tower and new flagship hotel for Mandarin Oriental in North America.
The design reflects a deep sensitivity to Miami’s natural context, using simplicity laced with richness and detail. Shma integrates diverse plant species, many native to South Florida, creating a living green environment that blends effortlessly into the surrounding ecology.
Inspired by the idea of an “island within an island,” the landscape is conceived as a
journey across a tropical paradise set quietly atop Brickell Key.
More than just a visual backdrop, the landscape is designed to immerse residents in a tranquil, restorative atmosphere. Every residence opens onto expansive terraces and lush private gardens, allowing the indoors to blend seamlessly into the outdoors. Elevated above the city’s energy, the landscape podium, spanning nearly 100,000 square feet, includes a variety of serene sanctuaries: infinity pools with planted edges, tea gardens, shaded promenades, wellness trails, private cabanas, and meditation zones. These layers of greenery offer a peaceful contrast to the vibrant skyline views and ocean horizon.
The planting palette, carefully curated with over 100 native and climate-resilient species, supports local biodiversity and reduces irrigation needs. The landscape also contributes to environmental performance, including managing stormwater runoff, mitigating urban heat, and reinforcing the site’s salt and wind tolerance, which are key to the long-term sustainability goals shared by Swire and the city of Miami.
At its core, the landscape design at The Residences is about balance: between luxury and nature, privacy and openness, global design excellence and local context. It is a rare sanctuary where refined living meets tropical vitality, wellness unfolds with every step, and the rhythm of the island flows within the rhythm of the city.
