“the particularly small area is enough for a single human being to sustain life.”

A project from Shma presents an experiment in transforming the space into functions in the form of housing to design a new lifestyle that takes up less space but still allows humans to do activities in their daily lives to the fullest so that in the future we will be able to build on when resources become scarce and limited.

Based on this idea, we propose a prototype called the “Medule”. Consider the Medule as the smallest experimental unit that takes up minimal space to test that the particularly smaller area is enough for a single human being to sustain life. While responding to various needs and performing a wide range of activities the same as performing them in a larger space as well.

Our design principle is based on collecting data and an analysis of human behavior while in quarantine. This can be divided into 2 main types: the Vertical Activities (working and eating) and semi-secondary activities (relaxing and sleeping). Including a data collection on factors such as light, temperature, humidity, sound, odor, size, and type of materials in order to design and construct an environment suitable for humans.

The Medule is designed to have a composition of 4 units in which each unit has different purposes of usage.

Core unit : A connector between other units that acts as a core of operation. It supports activities in a standing position such as exercise.

Unit A : This unit supports activities particularly in the positions of sitting and lying down such as sleeping, working, reading, yoga, or even stargazing.

Unit B : This unit supports activities where people are either sitting or standing such as working, cooking, washing dishes, or dining.

Unit C : This unit serves as an auxiliary unit. it provides an extra storage space for storing equipments, pets, or a small garden for relaxation
